So my father and I decided to make the trip over to Busch Gardens Williamsburg this past weekend. We have been wanting to go to their Howl o’ Scream event for a while. So this was the perfect time to go, so we packed up, and hit the road.
Overall the event was really good. The houses were solid, and the ambiance at the park was very nice. It put you in the Halloween mood, and that is exactly what you want out of a Halloween event! I will say though, the event was super crowded, and that hurt the event somewhat, but I will not give it a bad mark for that. Just know, that if you are headed the event on a Saturday night, prepare for a major crowd. Especially if you decide to go later in the season. So let me run down and do a review of each of the houses, and I will tell you what I did and didn’t like about the event.
Unearthed: Scarlett’s Revenge – 7/10
So this is also a house down at Busch Gardens in Tampa. I have to say that I thought this was a better version. It looses the cool factor of the giant animatronics, plus going through the old Gwazi station is very cool. But it makes up for this in length, and a lot more scenes. I don’t think the scares are as good in this one. But I think the sheer length of the house, is enough for me to like it better than Tampa’s version. Good solid house!
Catacombs – 1/10
I think this house is very weak, and I would not recommend it to anyone. I just think the scares are really lazy, and the house just does not add up to the other houses at the event. I don’t consider this a knock to the even though, just because most events have at least one stinker, and this was it for me…
Frostbite – 9/10
This was the best house of the event for me! I love the fact that the house takes place in the actual building for Curse of Dark Castle. I really enjoyed seeing some of the Dark Castle sets, and how they used them as part of the frostbite theme. This house was great, and if you could only do one house at the event, it would have to be this one. I may be a little bias, just because I already love Dark Castle so much. But still, I think the actual theme of the house, is quite solid! Great haunt!
Cornered – 6/10
Now this is kind of your run of the mill, corn maze type of haunt. We did go through it while is was still a little light out. So I am not rating it completely fair. But I still think it would have been pretty average. I think it was decent, and way better than Catacombs!
Lumberhack – 7/10
I really liked this outdoor maze! The sets were really well themed, and the scareactors were great! They even had a grinder, with sparks inside, which I thought was really cool. I love this house, but it was just too short. That is the only reason this is a 7 instead of an 8!
Circo Sinistro – 2/10
This house was just lazy to me, there were 2 sets that were exactly the same! The only redeeming factor, was at the end. I just don’t think this was a very good house, so i’m not going to keep ragging haha.
Deadline – 5/10
This was a decent house, and some of the effect were really cool. Especially this one scene in a subway train. I thought that was really cool. This house was not bad, nor was it awesome. So I give this just a middle ground grade. Solid!
So to be honest, there is really only one scare zone that stands out, and that is Demon Street. I think that is a very visually appealing, and had the most active scareactors. My favorite part of it was the “flames” on the top of the houses, it was a really cool effect. The other scare zones were decent, but not great. I just think they needed more scareactors. But it would be difficult for them to do so, just because it was so crowded, and there were already so many people on the pathway. I just don’t think it is something they could do. I think overall, the scare zones work well, and they fit in their respective areas. Plus not mention, there is plenty of them to go around. If you are interested, you can check out most of them on my YouTube video that will be up soon!
So as you guys probably know, I don’t do shows. They are just not my thing, and if I went to go see them just to do a review. It would either be me being brutally honest, or it would be me lying, and saying that I thought the show was good. So I just choose not to watch, because I am just not into them. Hope that you understand!
So I really enjoyed this event, I think that it was really solid, and I would go back if it was closer to me. We had to drive 9 hours, and with the crowd size, it might have been a one and done. Don’t get me wrong, doing it for the first time was super worth it. I loved it, and would do it again if it was closer. But who know, we might end up making the trek again. We will just have to see what the future holds. As far as this review, I think that’s about it, and I hope you enjoyed reading! I definitely enjoyed looking back on the event, and remembering some of the best parts!
Thanks for reading!
